Queries on DLLC and
meetings

| Timing :- 9:30 am |
|
- This time is rather early as the majority of
adults that may be interested are in full-time
employment and
- the second available sector, full-time parents
(usually women having to ensure children are off
to school) will have problems arriving promtly
unless they live very clode or have personal
transpoprt.
- Many people may noy have these. Some come from
many miles away, for example Calstock -
Gunnislake - Tavistock.
|
Date :-
Weekday |
|
- A week day is also inconsiderate if the purpose
of the commitee is to inform the lay public for
same reason as 1 above.
- It is hardly defensible to say there are
representatives of the public present as;
- They have little or no contact with the
public over this issue.
- Make little or no attempt to involve
themselves with the public over any of
the isses arising at the meeting and
- are even likely not to attend

|
- Apart from a small 2" square (to be generous
to you) advert in the back of the Herald, there
was no other attempt to involve the general
public.
- Even some memers of the Nuclear Free Coalition
who missed some of the NFC meetings did not know
of the DLLC venue.
- It would seem appropriate that each committee
members takes responsiblity to inform the people
they represent.
- This in some cases may overlap which
would at least ensure the meeting and
issues were cleary presented.
- Some commitee groups may like to work
together to produce a leaflet: for
instance the Police and Health
authorities may produce a joint leaflet
for distribution to GP's and Local
community groups etc.
- Local councillors may like to work with
the EA to provide and environmentall
leaflet giving date sof meetin gs and
methiods of public participation. These
could be distributed with the current
Local Goverenemnt flyers/newsletters
which are prevaling.

Public/Private
Meeting |
|
- Why is it a public meeting at all if there is
little or no attempt to involve the public. Suely
all the information available at the meetings can
be sent by mail electronic or otherwise to all
other commitee members.
- In fact why do groups/commitee mebers have to
wait for a meeting to be updated, surely any and
all releveant information should be distributed
immeadiatley it is available.
- If information is not communiacted immeadiatley
there is a percption of secrecy - so what is
there to hide.
- Is the meeting just an
- excuse to get out of the office
- an excuse for more taxes and therefore
more job security
- an ego trip by those involeved thinking
so,mehting important is happening via the
meeting
- a blatant sham to be open and involved
with the public concerns and opinions..
|
I will now address the three questions submitted by the
public, but first I would like to comment on the status of the
questions.
First there were very few, implying the public either does not
care or does not know of the meeting or considewrs that their
concerns will just be fobbed of by those who have an interest in
pursuing a Nuclear Platform in the heart of a city at whatever
cost in real terms or in insercurity via pollution, accidents or
sabottage.
Regarding the three
questions!
1. Ian Avent claimed there was an increase in
accidents.
- This was denied
- Captain J Binns (MOD) stated there
were 112 accidents of which only 6 needed to be
reported under regulations. The most serious being a
fall to a propective house buyer of MOD property and
a dog bite to someones had delivery post through a
letter box.
- DML however do have a list of
'nuclear' accidents or accidents involving fires on
Nuclear ships and failed to show there was a
decrease. This may be due to the poor presentation of
facts or skill by DML's represenative, Mr Frank
Francis (Director of Nuclear Safety)
2. RE: Tritum in Calstock
- Anil Costi of The Environment Agency
could find no referenence to the claim that Calstock
waters had the highest recording of tritium in the
river Tamar and tried to alleviate any similar
concerns through statictics which culminated with him
saying "the amount to water some meters away
from the dischare facility is so low in tritium that
given all other pollutants removed it would be safe
to drink according to EU regulations"
3. Employment
- The last question from Barabara Merriot was provoking as
it questioned the sustainability of the Nuclear business
on the grounds of economic benefits to Plymouth. The
chair siad he would repsond in writing as it was an
involved request.
